Social profile site MySpace has been under stress for some time now, especially since rivals like Facebook cropped up and stole a large chunk of its social networking thunder. However, MySpace has revealed its intentions to continue strengthening its musical offerings in an attempt to reposition itself in the market.
The musical focus of MySpace is set to expand with the help of a global rollout of features including artist data, music videos and integration with the iTunes Music Store. According to Brand Republic, the revamp is part of an attempt to distance the site from a head-to-head battle with Facebook.
Owen Van Natta, CEO of MySpace, has been guiding the site in a new, entertainment content-focussed, direction since joining the company in April. Van Natta was formerly an executive with Facebook.
The new features include an Artist Dashboard which will make it possible for users to have a look at information collected by MySpace, such as song plays, fan geography and trending data available for seven and thirty day glances. A new video feature will allow users to watch videos from MySpace's licensed catalogue and receive recommendations.
Van Natta explained that the rollout would help MySpace become the important distribution platform he hopes for. According to Brand Republic he said: "Artist Dashboard and Music Videos are an important step forward in our mission to define the future of how content is socialised on the Web."
A deal with Apple's iTunes also means that MySpace users will have the option to make music purchases directly through the site.
However, news from the Facebook camp reveals that the site is not content with dominating MySpace in the general social media field. An announcement that Facebook has partnered with music provider Lala to allow users to purchase tracks through the networking site indicates that Facebook will be offering MySpace stiff competition in the musical arena in the coming months too.
