New google GUI?

New Google interface rumours come true

Since December last a number of users have been reporting changes to the Google interface. At first a few users posted a screenshot online and the majority of the search community retorted that it was: "yet another Google hoax from search monkeys with too much time on their hands!". As more reports came in it became clear that this was no hoax and so we kept our eyes peeled for more information.

Now access to this new and modified Google 'skin' is available with the aid of some handy JavaScript. The changes see Google moving the top search tabs down the side and adding new "score bars".

At first glance the main focus of this offering from Google is clear - to encourage users to engage in some of the more specific search styles available. The addition of new graphical elements in PageRank style green score bars and clever positioning of this new wizardry to the eyes natural starting position definitely will encourage users to venture further into the world of Google tools.

Actually trying to make qualitative statements about the size and scoring of the green bars is much more difficult. Search terms for which Google returns no results still receive an overall scoring on all of the search types, potentially hinting at some kind of general proportionality or scalability - most probably against the main index or the approximate total results for that search. Search terms which include something intrinsic to a Google search category, such as 'logo', boost the associated bar significantly. However things get a little thrown out of the window when terms receive some green bar goodness only for nothing to be listed under that search tool category on click-through...

Without any official word from Google, speculation continues to be rife and, as ever, we will present you with the info you need to know as and when we discover it.
