New online TV service to be launched by Sky

It has been recently announced that popular TV subscription service British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) is launching an online TV service. BSkyB aims to maximise the use of its Sky Player facility; for the first time they are providing consumers with the option of watching its channels via the internet.

The Sky Player was originally launched for existing Sky customers but it will soon be available to both Sky and Non-Sky customers. To use the service, viewers will have to register online and install software on their PC. They will then be able to watch live channels provided by Sky and catch up on any programmes previously missed. What's more, to join up with the new online subscription service you do not have to be a Sky TV or Sky Broadband user.

Thus far, the channels expected to be available via the subscription service include the Sky Sports range. However, it has yet to be confirmed as to whether Sky 1 or any of the movie channels will be offered in the subscription package - deals have yet to be reached with US content owners to allow the viewing of specific programmes.

Furthermore, it has been reported that a price has yet to be agreed for the subscription itself. The official launch of the online TV service by BSkyB has also to be confirmed; although it is expected to be early 2009.

The launch of the online TV service comes at a time when the popularity of such offerings continues to rise amongst today's consumers. Watching TV online has become commonplace for many consumers, from viewing on wide desk-bound monitors to compact smartphones, a growth which has been facilitated by continuous improvements in broadband technology.

As BSkyB aims to reach a target of 10 million subscribers by 2010, the new online service may be the package that attracts new customers to their ever expanding business. Online television subscriptions may be nothing new to the web-savvy consumer, but as society continues to become immersed with the many online experiences of today, this new venture from BSkyB could prove to be very important in the expansion of its customer base.
