Yahoo! gives Microsoft the boot

For the second week in a row, newsletter fans, there's been just one thing on the lips of internet analysts, search engine experts and everyday web users alike: Microsoft's bid for Yahoo!.

The search engine pioneer, however, put the rampant speculation of the last ten days to rest with its official statement that Yahoo! would not be selling itself to Microsoft, claiming that the software giant's proposed $31 per share for the company was too low.

So will Yahoo! emerge dripping with success from the murky waters it finds itself in? Some analysts are predicting that Yahoo! may restart talks with AOL in order to bolster its business, a merger option that both companies have considered previously. It's also possible that Microsoft may raise its bid for Yahoo!, according to some reports.

However, both companies have been as busy as ever this week, despite the furore surrounding the possible takeover. Yahoo! released a live video platform on Friday which allows users to create their own live videos and share them over the internet.

And at this week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Microsoft revealed their new acquisition: smartphone maker Danger.

Also unveiled at Mobile World Congress was chipmaker ARM's unbranded mobile prototype - the first phone ever to use Google's Android software. The news is sure to please Google, who have been uncharacteristically quiet on the development front since Microsoft placed its bid for the search giant's biggest rival.

But the big three's other competitors haven't lain sleeping this week: AOL announced its acquisition of buy.at, an independent affiliate network, while popular social bookmarking site Digg has teamed up with Ask to launch its new BigNews site.

It's only mid-February and already the search world is spinning with dizzy excitement! And with so many months left in the year, who knows what to expect! Simply rest assured that with the bigmouthmedia newsletter as your trusty weekly companion, you can always expect the highlights of the search engine world to be delivered right to your inbox.
