Microsoft-Yahoo! tug of war keeps going

It's the first Tuesday of spring, newsletter fans, and after last week's snowfall, the bigmouthmedia Edinburgh office is certainly enjoying the longer, sunny evenings. But how are our friends in the world of search faring this week?

The ongoing tussle for power between Yahoo! and Microsoft continues with a range of contrary reports this week. Some have speculated that Microsoft could raise its bid for the search pioneer, while the Wall Street Journal has declared that the software giant is 'unlikely' to up its proposed offer for Yahoo!.

Despite the uncertainly, Yahoo! continues to chug out new developments; early this week, we saw the launch of Yahoo! Shine - a premier web portal aimed at women. The search engine even revealed its backing of the OpenSocial Foundation - a project pioneered by its long-time rival Google.

Google, on the other hand, has had a week of ups and downs. Last week the search engine announced its YouTube Insight feature, which provides users of the online video sharing site valuable data on their videos.

What's more, the search giant has just rolled out offline access to Google Docs, in a move that could take it a step closer towards challenging Microsoft's dominance over the office applications market.

However, over the past few days another Google executive has joined Facebook - the second to make the move in a month.

With so much lateral movement going on between the web world's current flag bearers, the possibilities seem endless for search development in 2008. And with the bigmouthmedia newsletter, you'll be privy to news highlights that will keep you in touch with new search engine trends and products every week.
