Top net names going toe-to-toe and tit-for-tat
The last week has seen two titans of the net engage in what feels like a constant case of one-upmanship with headlines clearly dominated by
Google and Microsoft. Delve into the bigmouthmedia newsletter to find out exactly what the two rivals have been up to in their fight for the top spot.
The week started with some bad news for Microsoft, as it was revealed that its
partnership with Yahoo! is expected to be delayed until 2010, however the software giant came out fighting by finally launching its (also delayed)
MSN music download service on Thursday.
But Google can't be kept quiet for long and by the end of the week the search seraph
launched Google Dashboard, a new interface designed to help users take control of their services and settings. Meanwhile, the approach of the festive season also sees Google set to cash in on Christmas with its
new commerce search offering for retail sites.
Microsoft attempted to step back into the limelight with the news that it had secured the first
international distributor for Windows Mobile, but Google shot right back with the news that it plans to make it big in mobile advertising by
buying ad network AdMob for a hefty £450m.
Meanwhile, the release of
October's internet browser market share report saw Internet Explorer (very) slowly losing ground to Firefox and Google Chrome. Microsoft also looks to be facing another delay as the
UK launch of Bing won't be appearing until the first quarter of 2010 at the earliest.
This week, one of our bigmouths also had a closer look at
Rupert Murdoch's plans to charge for content and cutting his stories from Google News inclusion, and wondered whether it might be a smarter move than first supposed.
The tit for tat approach may leave the biggest names in the net in a stalemate a lot of the time, but the users who get to enjoy the fruits of their labour are rarely upset by the battle for better, faster and smarter technologies. Find out about the innovations that delight the online world and the delays that dismay eager techies with the ever up-to-date bigmouthmedia newsletter.
