Apple and Google compete for headline supremacy

A largely positive week saw the online ecosystem shaking off the winter blues, as some of our favourite digital players revealed exciting new products and others let us in on some good news.

Rumours of the newest member of the Apple family have been flying for weeks, but the unveiling of the new iPad has sparked a whole new round of debate - now over whether it is a huge step forward or a small step sideways. Apple CEO Steve Jobs may have also ruffled feathers with reports that he blasted Adobe and Google in a private meeting.

The forecast for Yahoo! has appeared grim for some time now, but the unveiling of the company's fourth quarter profits for 2009 has created optimism going forward. Retail markets will also be smiling as research reveals the UK is Europe's top online spender.

Meanwhile, Google Social Search went beta, as the search giant continues its efforts to integrate personalised social media results and this week a bigmouth reporter had a good look at the future evolution of social media and ways to track and justify campaigns.

Speculation about Google's Nexus Two has also hit the net, with the revelation that Motorola could be the search giant's partner for the new mobile device.
