Building on their current mobile entertainment relationship, Microsoft and Nokia have agreed to collaborate further and include support for Microsoft PlayReady technology in Nokia phones.PlayReady is a content access technology and users of the Nokia S60 and Series 40 will benefit from being able to receive almost any kind of digital content as a result of the deal.
Under the agreement, content owners and service providers will be able to offer digital material for an increased installed base.
Consumers will also be able to manage their digital content more flexibly between home, mobile and online devices. For example, people will be able to download content on to their mobile phone and then transfer it to other devices, such as different mobiles and PCs.
Ilkka Raiskinen, senior vice president of Multimedia Experiences at Nokia, commented: "By adding support for Microsoft PlayReady technology, we are enabling service providers to offer a wide range of content and create truly compelling experiences across mobile devices, personal computers and online services."
The service is planned to be operational from some time next year and the technology will be able to support a wide range of audio and video formats, including Windows Media Audio and Windows Media Video, as well as almost any type of digital content, including images, games and ringtones.
The new service is likely to enhance the mobile web experience of Nokia phone users, as their software becomes increasingly able to accommodate online video sharing sites and other main features of Web 2.0.
