As the smart phone sphere's top two platform providers,
Google and Apple,
eye mobile payment technology, analysts have caused a stir by forecasting a Nokia-backed, m-commerce ready Windows Phone 7 will power past the iPhone and quickly become Android's biggest rival.
Number crunchers at the International Data Corporation (IDC) said that
partnering with Nokia is set to turbo-charge Microsoft's flagging smart phone sales and grow Windows' smart phone market share from 5.5 per cent to 20.9 per cent by 2015.
Meanwhile, Apple's iOS platform is expected to dip from a healthy 15.7 per cent stake in 2011 to a 15.3 per cent market share by 2015. Meanwhile, Android looks set to remain near untouchable - moving from a 39.5 per cent share in 2011 to a 45.4 per cent share by 2015.
IDC analysts explained pairing with only recently dethroned comms kingpin Nokia will give Windows the hardware edge it badly needs in order to upset the apple cart and oust iOS from its number 2 position.
"Up until the launch of Windows Phone 7 last year, Microsoft has steadily lost market share, while other operating systems have brought forth new and appealing experiences," IDC analyst Ramon Llamas said.
"The new alliance brings together Nokia's hardware capabilities and Windows Phone's differentiated platform. We expect the first devices to launch in 2012. By 2015, IDC expects Windows Phone to be number 2 operating system worldwide behind Android."
The news comes just as a Blomberg report disclosed that Microsoft will include mobile payment technology in the next version of its Windows operating system, meaning the sleeping smart phone giants could easily cash in on both
soaring smart phone adoption levels and a display advertising marketplace that's boosted by m-commerce on their way to the top.
