20 January 2009Obama gives Gmail the presidential thumbs up

With so many different email providers it can be difficult to decide which one is right for you. Hotmail, Gmail and
Yahoo! all have their own crowds of followers, but which of these is actually the best? For one man, who later today will be inaugurated as president of the United States, the choice is simple -
Gmail.
As the Obama administration makes the move into the White House, they will be temporarily changing his email address. In the period between owning a 'presidential transition committee' email and a White House email, Obama can be reached through his new Gmail account. Just don't expect him to reply straight away, he may be a little busy today.
No doubt
Google are delighted with the presidential endorsement, but a few questions should be raised over the administration's choice.
Considering it was only last week that
Obama's twitter account was hacked, security should be a major concern for the new president. No mention has been made on whether or not Google or the Obama administration will be adding additional protection to the account so we can only assume that the White House have a lot of faith in
Google.
While the presidential Gmail address is probably getting picked up by spambots all over the world, it should be safe thanks to Google's aggressive
spam filters. The concern in not whether or not the new president will be bombarded with emails offering a better mortgage deal or cheap Mexican Viagra, but whether or not a Gmail account is secure enough for presidential emails?
Sarah Palin showed us that Yahoo! Mail, the Republican's choice of email, just
wasn't safe enough so it will be interesting to see how Google fairs.
Alongside its powerful spam protection, one other thing Gmail is known for is its advertising technology, this sees the service display relevant adverts alongside emails. On a slightly less serious note, it would be interesting to know which adverts Google chooses to display alongside important presidential emails.
So, if you're thinking of changing your email address, consider a Gmail account. Not only is growing in popularity faster than Hotmail or
Yahoo!, according to TechCrunch, but more importantly it comes with the presidential seal of approval.
