Paid storage for Google users

Paid storage for Google users Google has rolled out a new facility which allows its users to purchase additional online storage.

The extra storage is intended for people with large collections of pictures, music and video files and can be used across a number of Google's products.

Developed by the Picasa team, the storage will be available on Picasa Web Albums and Gmail initially and then on other applications such as Google Docs and Spreadsheets in the near future.

Google says that the service will be useful to its customers, allowing them to do such things as upload a large number of full resolution images on to Picasa Web Albums.

Ryan Aquino, software QA engineers lead at Picasa Web Albums, commented on the official Google blog: "In the case of online storage, whether it's a picture, a video or an email, you should just ... be able to store it without having to worry about whether you've got enough space in each particular product."

"When you reach the limit of free storage - i.e. 1GB for Picasa Web Albums [and] 2.8GB for Gmail - consider this your overflow solution," he added.

The search engine provider intends to charge $20 per year for six gigabytes of extra storage and says that larger plans will be available ranging up to 250 gigabytes.

Google's share price rose by over a dollar to $515.75 in Friday trading, according to ADVFN.com.
