11 April 2006Panning for gold - the .eu rush
Possession may once have been cited as nine-tenths of the law, but on the internet it's a different story. For the last four months the .eu domain rush has been raging on. Back then you needed a fast hand, a 'rightful claim', and potentially a team of lawyers.
The intial rush for .eu domains was beyond belief on December 7th - even for the sharpest characters. David Beckham had his application in the post within ten minutes of the .eu 'sunrise'! Others were temporarily caught off guard and needed to enter into discussions with EURid - the .eu domain administrators. It took some time to hear back as they received 60 requests per second on the opening day, and within the first fifteen minutes had 40,503 applications. Many of these have proven to be controversial, including applications from The Netherlands which relied on a loophole clause found with a 'prior right' legislation rule.
During the sunrise period, more than 335,000 applications were received and 95,000 of those are known to involve conflicting claims for domains. For example '
www.polo.eu' was applied for by Volkswagen, Ralph Lauren and Nestle. The domain was finally awarded to Volkswagen for the simple reason that it got its application in first. Similar competing claims including applications for domains peaking into the hundreds were dealt with in a similar 'first past the post' policy dictating who walked away with the spoils.
Now the sun has set and the next stage is four days in. The 7th of April saw a relaxation of the rules and the result that anyone was able to apply for a .eu domain. The uptake was phenomenal - British registrants made up 236,573 applications by early evening, just pipped at the post by Germany with 237,928, and in third place were the Dutch with 125,426 applications.
"The new .eu domain name will become second only to .com in terms of importance and the volume of traffic that the best .eu domains are likely to attract," - Markus Eggensperger, Legal/PR director for the
Lycos portal.
Savvy web entrepreneurs clearly already knew this and it will take some time to clear and process the vast number of applications - only then we can wait for the inevitable trading in the new domains...
As ever, bigmouthmedia will keep you posted.
