Pay-per-Click

In September 1997 the company Goto (now known as Overture), was founded by Bill Gross' Idealab. In June 1998 they launched the first 'pay per placement' search engine to enable advertisers to receive placement of search results by bidding on specific keywords that are highly relevant to their sites. In one fell swoop the company created the market for pay per click search by redefining how businesses market themselves online.

The search engine enables advertisers to bid for placement of their sites in its search results with terms that are relevant to their businesses. These search results are screened for relevance by an in house editorial team, and are then distributed to thousands of Web sites across the Internet, including Lycos, MSN, and Yahoo! Advertisers pay the amount of their bid only when a consumer clicks on their listing, providing them with one of the most cost effective ways to drive targeted customer leads to their sites.

In July 1999 Netscape signed a deal to become a PPC results provider, and began displaying Goto results above its search listings. From that time on, many the major search directories have also begun displaying PPC listings in addition to their own search results.

In November 2000, Goto's PPC engine model was launched In the UK prompting the formation of Espotting the primary major European PPC model to make any headway to being a competitor to Goto.
