Since entering the iPhone market and being acquired by Microsoft, Powerset has been keeping itself busy by collaborating with the software giants on quick projects designed to be ready for testing within 30 days.
Their first joint project was focusing on Live Search Answers and expanding its coverage. Topical queries are mostly lacking in Answers currently, so Powerset selected some categories such as musicians, albums and films, etc and set about returning topic summary results with links. This is similar to the Freebase Answers shown in Powerset already, using data from Freebase which describes itself as "an open database of the world's information."
Another task the company set itself involves the much discussed semantic technology designed to generate improved captions for Wikipedia articles, which will then be pulled into the Wikipedia results that turn up on Live Search.
Since Wikipedia articles show up in a large proportion of most search queries, it's important that these captions are polished and relevant for the user. The main part of this task is seeing how the Powerset captions perform against the automatic Live Search captions that return for these results.
The third joint project is similar to the idea of being given alternative searches for misspelled words but actually gives related searches to your search queries. This uses Powerset's Factz to generate a list alongside the results on Live Search.
Suggestions like this can also go the other way, with Powerset using Live Search's tech. This one gives you related articles on Powerset enhanced Wikipedia articles and the suggestions come straight from Live Search itself.
The Powerset blog says:
"Powerset is excited that we're already able to make improvements to Live Search. Expect more announcements in the coming months, both of Powerset's technology integrated into Live Search and of enhancements to Powerset.com."
The testing on these projects is very limited at the moment, so if you see any in your Live Search adventures, you should count yourself lucky!
