Back at the start of the new year Google announced plans to again step up the vigilance against spam and other unethical spoofing techniques. Essentially Googles prime directive "Do no Evil" applies to everyone, everywhere, no matter how obscure or prominent your brand.
"The quality of our index and search results is of the utmost importance to Google,". This backs up their established guidelines which state "Don't deceive your users or present different content to search engines than you display to users"
The risks? BMW.de the german motorcar giants domain recieved a harsh but fair penalty and was removed entirely from Google's result pages on February 4th . The news was announced in Matt Cutts blog and serves as a sharp reminder to all webmasters, businesses and international giants alike that you need to take a long hard professional look at how and why your website is made.
BMW now will need to adjust the site, removing all unfriendly practices and enter into dialogue with Google who with time will restore faith in the site. One cant help but think that had the giant been with a professional and ethical agency they would not have needed to undertake such an approach, or more significantly try to recover from one.
Google has always been clear on what is and isnt acceptable, and gives an indication of what a search engine optimisation agency should and shouldnt offer. Bigmouthmedia has always lead the way in such "Do no Evil" practices and so if you are unsure if your site is by the book then a good place to start would be to speak with us....
