Samsung and LG to bring out Google Android phones

Samsung and LG to bring out Google Android phones Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics have revealed they will bring out mobile phones based on Google's much talked about Android software platform by the end of 2008 in the US.

The announcements were made at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Commenting on the developments, a Samsung spokesperson stated: "We have been talking with Sprint Nextel, the number three US mobile wireless operator, for the development of the 'Google Phone' with the launching slated for later this year," the Korea Times reports.

Meanwhile, an LG spokesperson revealed that the company has been in discussions with a number of wireless operators in the US, including Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile.

Both LG and Samsung have joined Google's Open Handset Alliance - an agreement under which more than 30 firms are working on applications for the Android system.

According to an LG official, the Android-based handsets will probably make their debut in local markets sometime in 2009.

Earlier this week in Barcelona, chip design company ARM revealed a prototype of an unbranded Android-enabled mobile phone at the Mobile World Congress.

The device, which was described by Wired News as an "Android-based smartphone", runs on the open source operating system.

The companies that will supply the parts for the handset have not yet been revealed.
