Researchers have found that email and social media use - at work and at home - is on the rise among today's web-savvy 18 year olds to 30-somethings, but instant messenger is in decline.
According to
WebProNews, a MarketTools survey commissioned by Microsoft shows that over half of 18- to 30-year-old students and professionals expect to be as reliant on email in five years' time, if not more.
Only 4 to 6 per cent of email users thought email would decline as social media communications and web conferencing gain in popularity.
The Redmond research also indicated that social media,
SMS, phone and face-to-face communication had increased in the workplace, though 15 per cent of professionals surveyed admitted that instant messaging had declined.
The news comes as both
Google and Facebook are said to be mulling a
multibillion Skype spend that would see the winning firm own or form a joint venture with the web conferencing platform.
Rumours have emerged that Facebook could offer $3 to $4 billion for Skype, even though the firm's initial public offering has been forecast at just $1 billion. However, as web conferencing seems set to eclipse instant messaging, the move could be a savvy one for the social network.
Microsoft have released an infographic celebrating the evolution of email to celebrate the news that the medium should sustain its popularity for the near future.
