Famous for its Rich List, which names the world's most influential and monied persons, the Sunday Times has launched a social 'rich list' to rank social-savvy web users depending on their activity on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Foursquare.
According to
Brand Republic, the publication has launched a social version of the rich list as it steps up its own social media activities.
The social rich list, which will lie outside News International's pay-wall, will use an algorithm to gauge the social media activity of readers who have registered to join the listing.
Users will be ranked according to their postings and use of social media platforms rather than by their "raw" follower numbers.
Social-savvy users will then be encouraged to post their rich list ranking to social networking profiles - in a bid to pull even more social darlings to the Sunday Times.
Speaking at the social list's launch just last Friday, the Times' online editor Gordon Thomson said the list showed that the publication - and News International - was "serious about social media."
Thomson also added that while the rich list "can only be accessed by the monied few," the social list can feature and be enjoyed by anyone.
The social list is expected to feature an overall list of social influence, which will most likely be dominated by celebrities. However, users will be able to access an individual comparative ranking which lists them against social media users they know.
