In the continually changing online airline industry there is a fight for supremacy between the airlines and the online travel agents. The aggregators are now gaining ground due to the increasing culture of price comparisons and an alleged saturation of the travel market. Therefore, any new travel aggregators in town will have to offer something different.
Step up Farecast, which launched today in the US as a Beta. This is an online price comparison site with a difference - it aims to predict how airline prices will change over time. Farecast looks at many factors such as pricing, scheduling, and availability all with the aim of advising the user on the best time to book to get the lowest price.
When a destination search is made, the site displays a chart to show fluctuations in the lowest price for a seat over the last 45-90 days and the average lowest price in that time. It also gives a prediction about the extent that it believes prices will change over the next 7 days. When a travel choice is made, the site links directly through to an airline website to make the booking.
At present the service is only available from two departure points - Boston and Seattle, but the company plans to expand after the Beta and hopes to go nationwide by the end of the year. We here at big mouth media think it's great - the sooner a version is available in the UK the better!
