29 January 2009The Google train continues: 90% of U.S search growth captured
Not long after it came to light that
Google performed
better than expected in Q4 comScore reports that Google managed to capture almost 90% of all the growth in search volume In the U.S. The comScore report also estimates that Google started with a market share of 58.5% in January 2008 which then steadily climbed up to 63.5% market share of all searches performed in the U.S by the end of the year.

The graph above shows Google's overall growth more clearly, with all of the other top
search engines remaining pretty stable throughout 2008. The growth is actually more attributed to an increase of searches per searcher rather than an increase in people using
Google. Nearly 85 billion searches in 2008 were generated by Google Sites and you can see in the graph below that this is an increase on 2007. The sites themselves grew by 12% to 149 million visitors on continued growth from its larger channels: Google.com, YouTube.com and Blogger.com.

So as 2009 rolls on, many people are expecting that we can see Google's dominance of the search engines continue as it aggregates more services together and in turn offers more functionality to make search available to users no matter where they might be.
