The Huffington Post launches in the UK

The Huffington Post launches in the UK Arianna Huffington launches the UK edition of her popular American news website 'The Huffington Post' today in London. This follows on from the launch of the Canadian version in May and is the first edition outside of North America.

The UK version went live on Wednesday and is edited by Carla Buzasi. It is similar in design to the US site and features the same coverage of entertainment, politics, living, fashion, comedy and technology and currently employs 10 members of full time staff.

The site features blog posts from Culture Minister Jeremy Hunt, Sarah Brown (wife of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown), Alastair Campbell (former press secretary to Blair), and Arianna Huffington herself. Tony Blair has also been announced as one of the writers contributing to the site.

Huffington's controversial blogging policy is carried over from the US site, where bloggers are not paid, but given the privilege of "showcasing their work to a global audience".

Ms Huffington said of the new launch: "We are arriving here in the midst of a rich and thriving media culture marked by great innovation. We look forward to adding HuffPost UK to the mix, and to our real-time 'digital water cooler' - which embraces the best of the new (immediacy, transparency, interactivity) and the best of the old (fact-checking, accuracy, fairness, and an emphasis on storytelling) - becoming the spark for many interesting conversations."

The Huffington Post was set up in 2005 and has been recently acquired by AOL for the sum of $315 million (£222 million). Despite the buy-out, Ms Huffington remains the president and editor-in-chief of Huffington Post Media Group.
