Thrifty meets nifty: tech-savvy shoppers to shop smart this season

Thrifty meets nifty: tech-savvy shoppers to shop smart this season The New York Times has reported that tech-savvy shoppers are set to popularise price-check apps following comScore's report that bargain-seeking shoppers have bolstered e-commerce sales this November, with online deals and web promotions having spurred credit conscious web users to click away their Christmas cash.

NYT journo Bob Tedeschi has predicted that bargain-hunting shoppers, hardened by the economic recession, will soon have a basket in one hand and a price-checking smart phone in the other, as shoppers look to sidestep the stingy stigma once associated with price-checking and instead turn to 'shopping smart'.

"When more people realise how much the new shopping apps can save - and I'm not talking about a buck or two - using a smart phone will be as important as using a cart," Tedeschi said.

The journo-turned-price-checking-champion recommended shoppers download at least two price-checking apps, in case one doesn't scan perfectly.

However, he advised some products are more equal than others in the app price-checking sphere - with electronics, books and appliances more likely to return bargain-busting results than fashion items or jewellery.

"The rule to keep in mind: If you would expect to find troves of information about an item online - like electronics, books, or appliances - you can expect good results from the apps," Tedeschi added.

The journalist said today's price-checking users risk increased scrutiny as other shoppers look on a little puzzled while the technology catches on, but the bargains will be worth it.

"At first, there is something unsettling about skulking around a store with a cell phone," Tedeschi said, "using it to scan bar codes and check prices. The behaviour is novel enough to draw glances from other shoppers, and more to the point, occasional glares from store clerks.

"Soon enough, though, it'll be different."
