Trendy kids YouTube top the cool chart Results from the CoolBrands survey 2008/09 are in, and YouTube has pipped Google to the post and topped the list in the online media category. The search engine giant comes in at second place, followed by social networking site Facebook and online encyclopaedia Wikipedia.

The overall top ten features five online and technology brands, with the iPhone in second place, Apple in third, audio and video manufacturer Bang & Olufsen are in fourth, followed by YouTube at fifth, and Google behind in sixth. Facebook also features in the Top 20, ranking at nineteenth having failed to appear in the list at all last year.

The top 500 CoolBrands are chosen every year by the Expert Council and members of the British public. The Expert Council includes famous faces such as fashion designer Ben De Lisi, DJ Trevor Nelson, and TV presenter June Sarpong. 70% of the weighting towards the official list comes from the Expert Council, with the remainder coming from 2,500 individual consumers accessed via a YouGov panel. According to The Centre of Brand Analysis who conducted the survey, the brands are judged on their style, innovation, originality, authenticity, desirability, and uniqueness.

In other YouTube related news, the video sharing site has today released their new video uploader from beta, giving users the option to opt-in to the new design. The new uploader allows users to input metadata such as title, description and tags while the file is uploading, and also allows multiple videos to be uploaded at the same time. The new video uploader also has a significantly larger file size limit of 1GB compared to its previous 100MB.

There is also further good news for YouTube as recent comScore figures reveal that traffic continues to rise, with almost 19 million unique UK visitors in August, which is up 5% on last month and up 20% on this time last year.
