Users of Google-owned video sharing site YouTube in the UK will be given the opportunity to make money from the videos they post, it has been revealed. The project, which is dubbed the YouTube Partner Programme, has already been established in the US and allows people who post videos on the site to share revenue generated through advertisements.
Some contributors in the US are reported to be earning thousands of dollars a month from their films.
A YouTube spokesman stated: "The more videos you have and the more popular your stuff is, the more money you are going to make," the BBC reports.
According to the broadcasting corporation, the first set of YouTube partners in the US, which include comedians apauledtv and peteandbrian, and singer Tay Zonday, have been responsible for producing a "significant percentage" of the site's traffic over recent times.
Zonday's song Chocolate Rain has received 14 million clicks so far, inspired 1,000 response videos and seen him travel to Canada and Germany to mark YouTube's launches there.
Zonday's success on YouTube led to follow-up 'Cherry Chocolate Rain', a lavish video funded by Dr Pepper that was associated with the soft drink manufacturer's new product, Cherry Chocolate Diet Dr Pepper.
Meanwhile, in the UK, a user named Panacea81 will be among the first individuals to take advantage of the new programme, the Guardian reports.
The tutorial produced by the individual provides insights into how to achieve an eye makeup look inspired by X Factor-winner Leona Lewis, and has already been watched by fans over 643,000 times.
