Good news for online marketing - according to new statistics from the Interactive Advertising Bureau (
www.iab.com) and PricewaterhouseCoopers (
www.pwc.com), online online spend grew by nearly a fifth last year to $313m, while total Internet advertising revenue in the U.S. totaled $1.5 billion for the fourth quarter of 2002, increasing over 2.3% percent from the previous quarter - a yearly total of nearly $6 Billion.
While the $1.5 billion fourth-quarter figure is down on the same period a year earlier, it marks the first single-digit year-over-year percentage decrease since the first quarter of 2001 and the first quarter on quarter increase in the same period. This marks a significant milestone in the fortunes of the industry since the dotcom days, and signals the maturation of online marketing into a stable, long term advertising and revenue stream.
This is particularly encouraging when compared to the Bellwether report from the Institute of Practitioners of Advertising (
www.ipa.co.uk), which states one in four online advertisers increased their online marketing spend during the first quarter of this year - especially as this was during a period where advertising on other mediums was down.
