Video search engine launches 'how to' guide

Leading video search engine blinkx has unveiled a new community forum and guide to help advertisers, marketers and content creators maximise traffic to online videos.

Demand for video search has exploded over the past year as growing broadband take-up and sites such as YouTube have allowed users to quickly and easily stream content.

"Because blinkx was built from the ground up for the video web, we have observed many things and created a number of internal best practices," said company boss Suranga Chandratilake.

"Today, we feel ideally positioned to offer useful insight into the art and science of optimising video content on the web."

The project includes a white paper on best practice as well as a forum allowing video search engine optimisation (VSEO) professionals to exchange tips and new developments.

As well as areas of common practice with traditional SEO such as linking and anchor text, there are important video-specific considerations such as copyright and whether site owners want traffic driven to their sites, said Mr Chandratilake.

"We've received an enormous number of questions from content producers and I wanted to build a more structured assistance program for them," he said.

"This effort isn't intended to make money, we simply wanted to be open and transparent about how blinkx and other search engines rank rich media content."

The site contains information on cleaning and conversion of metadata, title optimisation, leveraging site maps, content management, where to submit content and things to avoid.
