Video coming to Flickr

Video coming to Flickr Almost three years after being bought by search engine provider Yahoo!, Flickr may be set to feature videos, it has been suggested.

According to Dan Farber of News.com and TechCrunch's Michael Arrington, the photo-sharing site will soon make the function available to its users.

Writing in a TechCrunch blog, Mr Arrington stated that Flickr bosses have been promising that video will be added for some time, with co-founder of the firm Stewart Butterfield reporting in May last year that users would be able to upload videos "soon".

Despite the delay, it may now only be a matter of three weeks or less before the service becomes available, with Yahoo! reportedly having reached some product decisions concerning the integration of video on to the site.

Mr Arrington added: "Yahoo! PR and other employees are still dead quiet on the subject, but the buzz is growing and the leaks haven't been totally contained. Get ready for Flickr Video. It's coming."

Meanwhile, Mr Farber warned that adding video to a site which has been purely based on photos since its inception must be done in a way that is deemed acceptable by its online community.

He stated: "Launching a video service primarily to compete more with YouTube would turn the community off. It has to appeal, in an 'authentic' way, to the Flickr community."

Founded in 2002, Flickr was purchased by Yahoo! in March 2005.
