Vivisimo
Founded in June 2000 to develop a university-based algorithmic invention into a solid commercial product, it all began with a question in 1998: how could the founders' research on scientific discovery be leveraged to solve the information overload problem that occurs when users are faced with hundreds or thousands of documents returned by a search?
This led to a new approach to the problems of document clustering. They chose elegant output over elegant algorithms. The Innovation Works of the State of Pennsylvania and the U.S. National Science Foundation funded the early technology. The corporate site is designed around a demonstration of document clustering on the output of web search engines.
Vivisimo means lively and clever in Spanish and takes a different but effective approach to displaying results.
Even the best search engines can bury what you're looking for at the bottom of pages and pages of results, frustrating efforts to track down information.
Vivisimo overcomes that weakness by sending your queries to multiple search engines, including Google, and then quickly and automatically grouping the results into easily browsed clusters of information.
