Despite the current turbulence surrounding Yahoo! concerning a potential Microsoft takeover, the company has brought out a new live video offering for internet users.Yahoo! Live, which is described by the firm as "a new experiment in live video", is intended to allow people to create their own live video experiences and share them on the web.
Michael Quoc, director of advanced products at the search engine provider, highlighted a number of potential uses of the new service, including broadcasting concerts, webcasting live DJ sets and building personal live video speed dating applications.
He stated: "We've created a website and an API that lets you do all these things and many more."
Through the new site, users can create a channel, authorise their webcam and begin broadcasting to the public. Others can then watch the content they produce or choose to participate themselves via video, audio or text.
It is also possible for people to set up individual profiles and track how many individuals have watched their content streamed over the web. They can also keep track of how many broadcasts they have made and the total length of time they have been on air.
Since its launch, however, the site has experienced a number of technical difficulties, undergoing "intermittent outages" as traffic surged.
Yahoo! has reassured users that it has identified "some key improvements" it needs to make in order to ensure the service runs more smoothly in future, adding it is "working hard to implement those now".
