Yahoo! to cut auction site

Yahoo! to cut auction site Yahoo! has revealed that it plans to cut its North American online auction site, according to a message posted on the site.

The US and Canadian sites are to retire on June 16th, with the service continuing in only Honk Kong, Singapore and Taiwan.

A statement said: "After careful consideration, we have decided to close down our Yahoo! US and Canada Auction sites to better serve our valued customers through other Yahoo! properties."

It is the second service Yahoo! has retired in the past week, after officials revealed they were shutting down Yahoo! photos.

Users of the site were urged to switch to Yahoo! Web 2.0 photo sharing site Flickr and now the auction sites have suffered the same fate.

Hitwise research director Lee Ann Prescott said in a blog: "It comes with little surprise given Yahoo's advertising relationship with eBay, and eBay's massive dominance of the auction category.

"eBay websites (including eBay, eBay Motors and eBay UK and Canada) accounted for more than 94 per cent of visits the Auctions category for the week ending May 5th 2007."

The last day to list an item is June 3rd and listings will not auto re-submit after the same date, with the last day to bid and buy being June 16th.

Users will still be able to access remaining site tools, including My Account, until October 29th.
