At the end of last week Yahoo! made another update to their index. This is the second update in less than a month. Yahoo! have chatted about the index updates in their official blog, saying that you "may have noticed that they are occurring more frequently; this is the result of improvements to the indexing system".
This update will again mean changes in search rankings for sites, as well as a change in the number of pages that Yahoo! indexes at all in a site. It can mean a lot for a webmaster: you may see your site drop down the rankings, or even jump way up the rankings for a term that you have been optimising for, but for most ethical websites this update won't show many changes or produce any problems. However it will, probably, be devastating to some unethical webmasters out there who use spam techniques on their site.
What the update means, as far as Yahoo! is concerned, is that they are continually improving their service and they will not give up in the battle with Google for search supremacy. An attitude that deserves applause from those of us, and I do hope there are a number of us out there, who wish to see the possibility of a market monopoly by Google - or any of the search engines - minimised.
For the searcher this is all great news - it shows that Yahoo! is continually fighting against spam to provide us with better SERPs. It also means that Yahoo! will keep up the pressure on Google to make sure our search quality is always a priority for all of the search engines.
