Yahoo! Answers the Bell

Yahoo! has begun to integrate Yahoo! Answers as part of its search services. This new social networking and question answering service allows registered users to ask anything under the sun and get an answer from another member of the community.

This answering service addresses day to day questions such as what is a... and where is a... while organizing the answers into useful categories. This extra feature also enables users who conduct a Yahoo search to see how questions and answers are being surfaced within results.

If you do a web search for ice hockey you'll find practical tips about ice hockey at the bottom of the search result page, find links on community sites like Yahoo! Groups, and be able to search for home speaker setup advice on content sites like Yahoo! Tech. Firefox offers a link for adding Yahoo! Answers into the toolbar. Integrating Yahoo! Answers content into these areas will increase the findings and demand more contribution of people's knowledge.

Taiwan, Korea, China and Japan have lead the way with similar knowledge search products which have already made an impact on people searching the World Wide Web. This way of social searching is allowing users to find customized human centric information while placing less emphasis on algorithms and computer generated results.

Yahoo Answers' top-level categories include love and romance, news and events, dining and health, and beauty etc. There are also sub-categories for each category. Currently, the users dictate where they want their question to appear. For the time being and for the duration of the beta testing, users can only submit a question into one category, this could place a limit on users but new categories and sub-categories could come into effect soon, as could tagging to identify the nature of the information.

To encourage users to use the new search tool and to entice them to contribute good answers Yahoo! Answers has come up with a points and levels program. Despite similar concepts already being offered by Google and Microsoft, with the development of Answers, Yahoo! is getting that much closer to realizing their mission to give users the ability to find, use, and share knowledge easily.
