16 February 2009Yahoo! closes MyWeb service
Search engine company
Yahoo! announced last week that it will discontinue its MyWeb service next month. The company is now encouraging MyWeb users to continue using other Yahoo! bookmarking services instead.
Yahoo! launched the programme in 2005, the same year it bought bookmarking service Delicious. In a blog post on their website, Yahoo! noted that they bought MyWeb to help "users save valuable information they discover on the Web."
The company said they have continued to innovate their similar products, including the 2.0 release of Delicious and an upgraded Yahoo! Bookmarks, meaning the needs of MyWeb users are better served through those programmes.
According to CNet News, Yahoo! has been looking to de-emphasize the service since 2006, when it started offering switch-over services to Delicious and Yahoo! Bookmarks.
They note that MyWeb will be shut down on 18 March 2009, and that Yahoo! will continue to improve Delicious as a social bookmarking site. The firm is attempting to make the switch from MyWeb to Delicious and Yahoo! Bookmarks easier, and also provide an export service for those turning to other bookmarking services.
The move is yet another setback for the
search engine, which experienced a tumultuous year in 2008. The company cut 1,500 jobs and announced a 64 per cent drop in their third quarter profits before their CEO
Jerry Yang resigned. Microsoft also launched a failed takeover of the company for $44.6 billion, which Yahoo! rejected despite its generous offer, while
Google abandoned the paid search advertising deal they held with the company.
