Yahoo! competes to be most visited news site

Yahoo! competes to be most visited news site Yahoo! is among the companies competing to be identified as the most visited online news site, it has been reported.

According to data produced by comScore, the search engine provider's news site topped the list of news providers, securing almost 35 million visitors last month, followed by MSNBC - which saw around 27 million people view its news - and CNN, with 26 million visitors.

However, figures produced by Nielsen Online suggest that it was in fact CNN that came top in the popularity stakes, with the Time Warner-owned firm experiencing almost 33 million visitors, followed by Yahoo! News and MSNBC, which had in the region of 31 million and 30 million viewers respectively.

Commenting on the findings, David Payne, senior vice president and general manager of CNN.com, noted that there are considerable differences between the sites, Reuters reports.

Whereas Yahoo! News is predominantly an aggregator of news articles and its page is connected to a major portal - which has averaged more than 108 million viewers each month this year - more than 90 per cent of visitors to the CNN site go to it directly, he added.

Mr Payne went on to say that, although MSNBC produces a lot of its original content, its headlines are also linked through the MSN portal.

Yahoo! News is a provider of articles, with the majority of its stories coming from services such as the Associated Press, Reuters and Agence France-Presse.
