Yahoo! launches new results pages as Silver Lake consider buyout

Yahoo! launches new results pages as Silver Lake consider buyout Despite the recent firing of its CEO Carol Bartz, Yahoo! is adopting a business-as-usual approach by launching improved search engine results pages [SERPs]. A cleaner design for the pages has been implemented with navigational filters and tabs showing related content such as videos and images.

"At Yahoo!, we're always looking for ways to make the Yahoo! Search experience even more organized and streamlined while serving the most relevant content," Paul Ko, Girish Ananthakrishnan and Caroline Tsay wrote on the company blog.

"We have been working to unify the search experiences across web, multimedia, and vertical search results pages with a design that is clean and intuitive."

However, much bigger changes may be in store for the company as investment firm Silver Lake Partners is reportedly mulling an acquisition offer for Yahoo!

Bloomberg reported yesterday that Silver Lake's plan includes the liquidation of Yahoo's assets in Asia and focussing the firm's core business elsewhere in hope of attracting a new buyer.

With the removal of Carol Bartz, Yahoo! may be ready for acquisition, as a new chief executive has yet to be hired.

One source even told the Wall Street Journal that selling part of or all of Yahoo is a top priority of the firm's top brass.

Daniel Loeb, the CEO of investment advisor Third Point (a major Yahoo! shareholder), as reported by Cnet, wrote a note to the Yahoo! board last week citing the failed 2008 Microsoft buyout as a reason for the board's unfitness for duty.

"It is also now widely recognised that the board made a gross error in turning down the $31 per share Microsoft bid in 2008, which would have generated significant returns for Yahoo's shareholders," he said.

"This mistake is all the more frustrating given Yahoo's current depressed stock price of $13.61 per share - far below the company's intrinsic value."
