Yahoo! new web mail allows users send free text messages Yahoo! has launched a new version of its web mail application, allowing its users to send free text messages from Yahoo! Mail to mobile phones.

The service so far applies to phone numbers in the US, Canada, India and the Philippines.

With the new facilities users, will also be able to send instant messages from Yahoo! Mail to members of Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger.

In addition to these real-time communication features, the new version includes speed and performance enhancements and productivity refinements, according to a company statement.

As part of these refinements users are set to benefit from advanced search options, including the ability to narrow results by sender, date, folder and attachment type.

The search engine provider has also introduced a series of shortcuts for its US customers who can now right-click on underlined dates, keywords and names.

Yahoo! will continue to provide its traditional web mail interface, Yahoo! Mail Classic, as well as the new service.

Vice president of Yahoo! Mail John Kremer commented: "We have always been focused on making it easy for people to connect to those who matter most to them and, during the beta testing period of the new Yahoo! Mail, we were able to incorporate a number of enhancements based on valuable feedback from our users.

"Now, with the all-new Yahoo! Mail, we're creating a more social email experience."

Yahoo! Mail is a free email service currently available in 21 languages.
