Yahoo! offers open source cloud server Yahoo! is set to launch an open source version of its Traffic Server next Monday, providing users with a high-performance application server for cloud computing services.

Techworld reports that Yahoo!'s new technology will be unveiled at next week's Cloud Computing Conference & Expo in Santa Clara, California. Yahoo! is already offering the code for its Traffic Server through the Apache Software Foundation, and has made the software open source with the aim of building a strong developer and user community. The company has stated that even competitors such as Google and Microsoft are permitted to make use of the technology if they choose.

Yahoo! claims that its Traffic Server will provide services for cloud computing including authentication, load balancing, routing and session and configuration management, with plug-in architecture allowing web traffic to be delivered at high speeds.

Senior vice president of cloud computing at Yahoo!, Shelton Shugar, explains: "[Traffic Server ] allows us to speed consumer access to content.

"It can process upwards of 35,000 requests per second."

Mr Shugar states that the software will be useful to any high-volume website. "The folks who will be interested in this are people building clouds and using these services. They'll understand the value of Traffic Server and what they'll be able to with it. There really isn't much out there that compares with this from a scalability standpoint."

Vice president of research at Datacenter Networks, Cindy Borovick, views Yahoo!'s open source technology as: "all about creating Yahoo! Cloud as a platform that is attractive to developers.

"By having an open source traffic server, Yahoo! is saying that the network infrastructure is important and its platform has network intelligence that will create a better end customer experience and as a result drive up customer confidence, intimacy and revenue. It's not a deal-breaker but it is a true value-add."
