Young women have been revealed as the dominant group using the internet in the UK. Figures released by Nielsen//Net Ratings showed that women aged between 18 and 34 make up 18 per cent of the British online audience. The data also suggests that young females spend more time online than their male counterparts, accounting for 27 per cent of UK computer time.
The 18-34 age group also proved to be the most prevalent age group across the ratings categories, making up 32 per cent of active online Britons.
But the report suggested that it isn't just young people logging on in the UK, with one in four Britons online aged at least 50.
In fact, the study showed there are 1.7 times more over-50s Brits than children under 18 actively using the internet.
"The internet is no longer dominated by young male adults," Alex Burmaster, European internet analyst at Nielsen//NetRatings revealed.
"Times have changed considerably and many will be very surprised to see that women aged 18-34 are now the most prevalent group online and that a quarter of the online population is at least 50 years of age.
"Companies who understand this composition when providing services or content through the web or simply advertising online will maximise their chances of success in the internet of the future."
The total internet audience is split almost equally between men and women, with 51.5 per cent of users being male and 48.5 per cent female.
