YouTube to be screened on Apple TV

YouTube to be screened on Apple TV Fans of Apple's innovative range of products and popular video website YouTube are in luck, because Apple TV set-top boxes will soon be able to automatically stream YouTube videos.

At the moment Apple TV users are only able to screen content available in their iTunes music and video library.

But come mid-June, Apple TV will provide the link-up to YouTube's video catalogue, although copyright issues may yet pose a problem.

Viacom is currently suing YouTube for $1 billion (502 million pounds) for violating copyright, but revealed it would be prepared to license material to Apple.

The US media conglomerate, which owns the MTV network, brought legal action against the video sharing site after claiming that thousands of its copyrighted clips had been used without permission.

"We're always vigilant about protecting our copyrights," a Viacom spokesperson told Reuters. "But we would welcome the opportunity to license our content to Apple as we do with all distributors."

YouTube users will be able to log onto their personal accounts via Apple TV, although the full catalogue of videos isn't expected to be available until autumn.

Apple TV was first unveiled in September last year, alongside the launch of the fifth generation video iPods.

The devices began shipping in March and Apple has revealed that it is offering a new Apple TV unit with a 160 gigabyte hard drive.

It features four times the storage capabilities of previous models, with space for 200 hours of video, 25,000 photos and 36,000 songs, or a combination of the three.
