YouTube launches Merch Store

YouTube launches Merch Store Google-owned YouTube has announced plans to start selling content-related merchandise via the site on user channels.

The online video giant blogged that the new addition will see them teaming up with third-party affiliate sites to flog goods to the masses.

"Fans will be able to buy artists' merchandise, digital downloads, concert tickets and even unique experiences like meetups," Senior Technical Account Manager Christian Weitenberner wrote on the YouTube blog.

The latest YouTube venture will see the site partnering up with several other companies, including Topspin for merchandise, Songkick for concerts and iTunes and Amazon for music downloads.

The brand new Merch Store will be rolled out on the video sharing site over the next few weeks, and with 800 million visitors on the site and three billion videos viewed each day, the online video giant is hoping to capitalise on its vast amount of traffic.

Although exact financial details of the deal remain undisclosed, YouTube indicated it intends to take a small percentage of sales in order to cover costs. The revenue received by musicians will remain as if the consumer has gone straight from the affiliate site, regardless of whether the purchase was made through the Merch Store or not.

In the blogosphere the reception of the new store seems thus far mostly positive.

It "definitely gives these sites more of an engaging presence for artists with their fans. These destinations will now become more than just a way to discover music videos, but also a way to transact business and actually see the artist and buy their works," TechCrunch wrtier Leena Rao said.

With the recent announcement that YouTube plans to bring film streaming to Britain, the new Merch Store will continue to offer users even more to explore on the popular site.
