YouTube to launch live video streaming service

YouTube to launch live video streaming service Google-owned video sharing site YouTube has revealed it is preparing to offer its own live video channels.

Under the plans, which were confirmed by co-founder of the site Steve Chen at a recent New York party, users of the site will be able to produce clips that will go live over the internet.

In this way, people will be able transmit videos of special events - such as weddings - live across the web, as well as musical performances and so-called 'lifecasts' of their daily lives, among other things.

Mr Chen stated: "We've never had the resources to do it correctly, but now, with Google, we hope to actually do it this year."

YouTube has yet to make an official announcement regarding the new service, however, with a spokesman saying: "We are constantly working to develop new features and improve the product for our users but we don't have anything to announce at this stage," the Telegraph reports.

Meanwhile, technology commentator Bill Thompson stated that the video streaming service is an "obvious thing for YouTube to do".

He added that increasing numbers of people possess the necessary technology, with mobile phones and laptops equipped with video cameras enjoying rising popularity among consumers.

Earlier this year, YouTube extended its Partner Programme - which allows users of the site to make money from the clips they post - to the UK.
