Google warn webmasters to watch for unnatural links

Over the last few months, Google has been targeting unnatural links that have been used on websites to enhance indexing and page rank, citing its non-tolerance of these practices in its webmaster tools guidelines.

This emphasis on link quality reflects in the fact that since December 2010, Google has sent numerous webmasters emails giving notice of the unnatural links on their sites.

As reported by Web Pro News, Google has sent out email warnings to webmasters advising on specific link types to be wary of.

"Specifically, look for possibly artificial or unnatural links pointing to your site that could be intended to manipulate PageRank. Examples of unnatural linking could include buying links to pass PageRank or participating in link schemes," the email reads.

Once these links are removed, Google request that webmasters resubmit their site for search performance.

However, this has brought up many queries from webmasters who have been caught off guard. The validity of link exchange schemes are one of the grey areas that has caused debate on the webmaster forums.

In order to avoid being picked up for such practices, experts such as Navneet Kaushal of Web Pro News, advised sites not to participate in link schemes that involve buying or selling PageRanks.

Also avoid linking to web spammers and refrain from doing too much reciprocal linking, Kaushal said, ensuring that other websites link to your website naturally.

All webmasters should be careful to check that their links follow Google's guidelines and discard any links that don't.
